Hiking in the Tatras - security rules

    
IF YOU ARE GOING INTO THE MOUNTAINS:
  • it is best to hire a licensed guide, who should show a proper identification listing the range of his qualifications,
Moreover:
  • do not go into the mountains alone.
  • check if the trail you have selected is open to the tourist traffic, if it is appropriate for your level of fitness, knowledge of the mountains and possessed equipment.
  • check the weather forecast, and in winter, possible avalanche warning.
  • dress properly for the current weather conditions, remembering that the temperature in the mountains drops approx. 1°C on average per every 100 m of height.
  • put on comfortable mountain footwear.
  • put warm, wind stopping, waterproof clothing, a hat, gloves (even on a warm summer day), a torch, a map and a cellular phone in your backpack.
  • leave information about the chosen trail and the planned time of return to someone responsible at the place of your stay.
  • remember that buying specialist equipment you have not bought the skills to use it.
IN THE MOUNTAINS:
  • do not change the route of the planned hike (nobody will know where to look for you). If you have changed the route of your hike, inform about it someone at the place of your stay.
  • pay attention to the information–warning signs.
  • if you lose the trail, if possible, return following your own footsteps.
  • during stormy weather avoid ridges, watercourses and chains.
IF YOU SEND YOUR CHILD INTO THE MOUNTAINS:
  • check if the itinerary contains mountain hikes and if a licensed guide’s assistance has been planned.
IN CASE OF AN ACCIDENT
  • assess the state of consciousness of the victim as well as the type of injury.
  • secure the site of accident.
  • protect the injured person from another injury and heat loss.
  • evaluate, if you are able to render aid safely, so as not to become another victim.
  • inform the rescue service about the type of accident, where it took place and how many injured people there are.
  • do not leave the injured person without care until the rescuers arrive.

  • inform tourists passing by,
  • yell “ratunku” [rAtVnkV] 6 times a minute,
  • at night flash the torch 6 time a minute.
