The commune of Bukowina Tatrzańska - some interesting facts

The commune of Bukowina Tatrzańska spreads over a substantial area of the High Tatras which makes it an unquestionable leader, on the map of communes of the entire Poland, in the number of records held in various fields and an absolute phenomenon with regard to their originality.

And so, the following can be found in the commune:

  • The largest difference of levels – between the highest (Rysy) and the lowest (the River Białka) point there are 2000 meters.
  • The highest annual attendance of tourists – one hundred per one resident (over a million annually).
  • The highest number of bears – from three to six.
  • The longest-lingering snow cover – from October to June.
  • The largest, total depth of tarns – within the area of the commune amounts to as many as 325 m.
  • The oldest and largest eternal snow cover, i.e. a patch of unmelting snow which is 400 years old and a dozen or so meters thick.
  • The highest waterfall in Poland – Siklawa which is 70 meters high.
  • The highest recorded oxygen depletion in the rarefied mountain air reaching almost 27% on the peak of Rysy.
  • The largest number of climbing routes – approximately 600 on 12 kilometers of ridge.

Morskie Oko, reached by 800 thousand tourists annually, is the most numerously visited natual landmark in Poland and one of very few in the world of such high rate of attendance.

The dense network of hiking trails located in the mountainous part of the commune is 45 km long and according to guides it takes 60 hours of intensive march, covering 9 kilometers of climbs. Tourist facilities in the Tatras include mountain lodges in Roztoka, Dolina Pięciu Stawów, Morskie Oko as well as a restaurant on the peak of Włosienica. Tourists may cover the route from Palenica Białczańska to Morkie Oko on highlaners’ traditional wagons, and sleighs in winter, pulled by horses. Price list depends on the season.
